Delhi University on Monday, September 2, 2024, through the notice alleged St. Stephen’s College to increase the sanctioned quota for the Christian candidates in its revised seat of allocation list and also that the college left some vacant seats for a few B.A. courses, although the candidates fulfilled all the criteria to get admission in the college.
As per the notice by Delhi University, on August 28, 2024, when DU received the program-wise list of the shortlisted candidates from the college, the university identified certain issues, like there were no specific details of the B.A. program combinations provided that could cause problems in the further admission process.
The college agreed to make the changes to the issues. Hence, on August 31, 2024, college again sent the list to Delhi University after making the changes. But according to DU notice, in the revised list as well, it has been found that no seats have been allocated to some B.A. program courses, whereas more than sanctioned seats were given to Christian minorities. And for some popular courses like B.Sc. (H) Chemistry and B.Sc. (H) Physics, vacant seats were left even after the candidates got qualified in the Common University Entrance Test (CUET).
To counter the university notice, St. Stephen’s Principal Johan Varghese had also alleged to the university that the college had given all the necessary details to the university by 12.20 am on August 28 and made a request to open the fee portal for selected candidates, but the university didn’t respond to their requests.
Delhi University is one of the most popular universities in India, and St. Stephen’s is among the most prestigious colleges under Delhi University. Although there are already tensions between both the university and the college, the recent quarrel between them further intensified the issue. These rifts also enhance the dishonor to both of them.
