BHU To Start 12 Scholarships, Received Donations From Its Alumni

Formerly known as Central Hindu College, BHU was established in the year 1916 at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It is a public university and Asia’s largest residential educational institute with more than 60 hostels and housing for full-time faculty. BHU has many prominent alumni and faculty members which includes famous names such as Robert M. Pirsig who is known for his notable work in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. It also had Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan as its administrator, who in the future became the president of India.

This year, Banaras Hindu University will be providing 12 new scholarships for its eligible students from different programs. For the same, the university has received a donation of Rs. 60 lakhs from its alumni in total. The donations were under the Pratidana initiative of the university by Shri Jagdish Jhunjhunwala and Smt. Kishori Jhunjhunwala.

Kishori completed her graduation in Industrial Engineering, the batch of 1954, and is the wife of renowned industrialist Dhinanath Jhunjhunwala. The family runs Jhunjhunwala oil mills Ltd. The cheque of 50 lakhs was handed over to the current vice chancellor of BHU, Professor Sudhir Kumar Jain, to provide 10 scholarships of Rs. 25,000 each.

8 scholarships will be awarded to eligible students of Mahila Mahavidhyalaya on a merit basis and 2 scholarships will be given to students of Acharya in Sanskrit Vidhya Dharma Vijnana sankaya (Faculty of Sanskrit Vidya Dharma Vigyan). Recalling their student days at Banaras Hindu University, Jhunjhunwala told how BHU was a pillar in shaping and transforming the lives of all the students who now are working in different sectors and bringing glory to the university all across the globe.

Jagdish Jhunjhunwala, MD, JJ Plastalloy Pvt. Ltd., also an alumnus of BHU, completed his M.Sc. in Nuclear Physics in 1973. He donated a sum of 10 lakhs that will constitute two scholarships for female students of BSc (Hons) Physics. He is the son of Sh. Ramavtaar Jhunjhunwala, brother of Sh. Dhinanath Jhunjhunwala was also identified as Gita Purush due to his vast knowledge of the Holy book Bhagwat Gita, He was a pass out of B.Sc. Soap Technology, the batch of 1944.

In conversation with Jagdish Jhujhunwala, he said- it was a privilege of having Prof. O. N. Srivastava and Prof. P. C. Sood as his teachers and guide.

By expressing gratitude, Vice Chancellor Stated – Banaras Hindu University is a great institute that has time to time contributed towards Nation Building and the affection of the alumni towards the institute is visible prominently by the ways they take steps in the process of further development of the institute. He concluded his statement with a commitment to creating many opportunities and resources for the betterment of its students and infrastructure in the future.
