The government of India is an umbrella for various organizations to fulfill different goals. Every year many candidates are recruited for varied ministries, offices, and departments, these recruitments are handled by Staff Selection Commission (SSC). SSC is a very important departmental organization of the government of India. It is one of the major bodies of the Department of Personnel and Training consisting of a chairman, two members, and a secretary (also known as controller of examinations).
Formerly, SSC was called the Subordinate Services Commission instead of the Staff Selection Commission. It was established in the year 1975 and since then it has been recruiting staff for Group B and Group C posts. The recruitment procedure is completed through various exams. The major exams conducted by Staff Selection Commission are as follows –
- General Duty Exam (GD exam)
- Multitasking Staff Exam (MTS exam)
- Junior Engineering Exam (JE exam)
- Central Police Organization Exam (CPO exam)
- Stenographer Exam
- Combined Graduate Level Exam (CGL Exam)
- Combined Higher Secondary Level Exam (CHSL exam)
The minimum qualification required for this Staff Selection Commission exam is that you need to be an undergraduate from the 12th class board.
Here is information on various exams that are conducted by SSC –
1. SSC – GD Exam.
Briefly known as the General Duty exam is conducted by Staff Selection Commission to recruit candidates who are eligible for the post of constable (GD) in Border Security Force, Sahastra Seema Bal (SSB), National Investigation Agency (NIA), Secretariat Security Force (SSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Rifleman in Assam Rifles (General Duty).
The candidates for the recruitment are selected according to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that is mutually agreed upon between the Staff Selection Commission and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
2. SSC- MTS exam.
Also known as Staff Selection Exam for Multi-tasking staff, its recruitment is done for the appointment of candidates under various departments of the Government of India.
3. SSC – JE exam
Staff Selection Commission every year conducts the SSC Junior Engineering exam for recruitment of candidates for Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, and Quantity Surveying and contracts engineer posts that will work for various departments and organizations that will come under the Government of India.
The recruitment of Junior Engineers is done for the below-mentioned departments –

4. SSC – CPO exam
Staff Selection Commission conducts the Central Police Organization exam intending to recruit candidates for the posts of Assistant Sub-Inspector in CISF, Sub-Inspector in Delhi Police Force, and Central Armed Police Forces. The candidates need to at least have the education qualification up to Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university or college.
5. SSC- Stenographer Exam
This exam is conducted annually at the All India level to recruit candidates for the post of stenographer at Grade C – Nongazette post and Grade D post for various departments, organizations, and ministries that come under the Government of India.
6. SSC – CGL exam
It stands for Combined Graduate Level Exam and it recruits candidates for Group B level posts such as-

This year SSC CGL Exam dates were announced along the SSC Calendar 2023. The Tier 1 Exam is going to be held between 14th July to 27th July 2023.
7. SSC – CHSL Exam
The Staff Selection Commission conducts Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) Exams for candidates who wish to work for different ministries and departments that come under the CHSL exam. Here is the list of SSC CHSL recruitment positions –

How many attempts are allowed?
- For candidates who belong to the general category the age limit is between 18 to 27 years and 9 attempts are allowed.
- For candidates who belong to the OBC category, the age limit is between 18 to 30 years of age, and 11 attempts are allowed.
