University of Delhi has recently faced a sharp opposition from teachers following a circular it has released stating that the upcoming mid-semester break which is scheduled for October 27,2024 to November, 3, 2024 will only apply to students of Delhi University and no the faculty members. According to the circular, teachers who wish to take leave during the mid-semester break period are required to formally apply for it, sparking outrage among faculty members.
Faculty staff showed their criticism by calling this notice as “autocratic” and “unfair”. Teachers argued that this break should apply equally for both teachers and students as most of the teachers use this time for academic activities, meetings, conferences and personal commitments such as visiting their families as most of them are non-Delhi resident teachers who travel during this time.
Secretary of the Democratic Teachers’ Front, Abha Dev Habib, said that university is forcing teaches to use their personal leaves as many teachers visit their families at this period of time. She also added that this move by Delhi University reflects a growing trend of disrespect toward teachers’ needs and rights.
Mithuraaj Dhusiya, a member of Academic Council argued that this decision by DU creates unnecessary pressure on faculty. He also pointed out that the circular overlooks UGC guidelines and neglects teacher’s need for rest. He along with other faculty members, is urging the university to reconsider this decision to ensure fair treatment for teachers during the break period.
Delhi University Teachers’ Associate (DUTA) is planning protests and meetings with the university administration to demand that teachers receive the same break. They are trying to withdraw that circular by highlighting the way decision affects the well-being of faculty members.
This incident shows that there is need for more equitable and transparent policies within the university which may bring more balance between all the stakeholders within the academic environment.
