Over 1,40,000 students were eligible to vote for Delhi University Student’s Union elections 2024-25 which were held on Friday, September 27, 2024. In view of the elections, the security had been increased across the university. A total of 52 polling centers were put across the north and south campuses of Delhi University. The voting was done in two phases, first between 8:30 am and 1 pm for the students enrolled in day classes, and the second time, between 3 pm and 7 pm for those in evening classes.
As per university officials, the security for the elections had been increased as flying squads were made which helped in maintaining vigilance across the university, and close-circuit cameras also helped in maintaining vigilance. Almost 600 security personnel, comprising of the Delhi Police, paramilitary staff, and university officials, were deployed during voting.
First-year students who hadn’t received their ID cards so far were able to cast their votes only if they showed up either with their voter ID card, Aadhaar card, driving license, or PAN card. For the students of the second year, showing their college ID card was the only option to become eligible to vote.
All classes across colleges were canceled on Friday, the university said.
Just like last year, this year as well the two parties main contenders of DUSU elections were Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). ABVP won three out of four central panel seats in the election.
Additional Information:-
Delhi High Court on Thursday, September 26, 2024, in its hearing allowed DU to carry on the DUSU elections but imposed a necessary condition that counting of votes will not take place until the court gets satisfied that all the posters, banners and hoardings have been removed and the public property has been restored. Till the time, the court had ordered University of Delhi to store the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and ballot boxes safely with itself. This declaration comes in response to defacement and misuse of fund for the DUSU elections. The university guaranteed the High Court that it will supervise that candidates comply with the rules and guidelines to maintain decorum in the election process.
