Peek into DU: Lady Shri Ram College For Women (LSR)

Welcome to Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR) where the opportunities are endless and your opinions do matter. This 60+ years old institution has been the country’s leading college for women, empowering them for an enlightened future. Here are some of the questions that we get asked frequently.

  1. “How much do I have to study to get in?”

LSR usually has high cutoffs along with its peers like SRCC, Stephens. In 2021, the cutoffs were as high as 99.25% (Psychology). So yes, the top percentile usually gets into this college. If you’re hoping to get in, study hard. And hope you’re good in extra-curricular as well.

  1. LSR ka koi famous alumni batao, yaar?”

Ever heard of Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Prize winner or Maneka Gandhi, Sakshi Tanwar, Nidhi Razdan, Tina Dabi, Chhavi Rajawat? Yeah, proud Elsas.

  1. “Nerds must be studying all the time, right?”

Actually, no. LSR is all about extra, my friend. Most of the students here are in atleast one society. There are 31 student societies in LSR. Our Western Music Society, Dramatic Society, Dance Society, Debating Society, Elocution Society are all quite popular in the Delhi University circuit. They have a rigorous yet fun selection processes. Apart from this, we also have NSS, NCC, NSO which keeps you occupied (especially NSS hours which have to complete). It is worth mentioning that Tarang, the annual cultural festival of the college is one of the most happening festival in DU.

  1. “How is the campus, then?”

Well , LSR has one of the most well-maintained campus in DU. Most of the classrooms in the college are AV equipped. The whole campus is disabled-friendly. Sit on the green lawns, roll and run around like a dog, read a book, Instagram some pictures with our beautiful ponds, you’ll feel right at home.

  1. “Which subjects are LSR most known for?”

The most sought for subjects are Psychology, English, Economics, and Political Science. The faculty here is highly qualified, some having experience in teaching of more than 25 years and awards in their respective fields.

Now let’s come to the important questions pertaining to students:

  1. “Where do you hang out in the college?”

Students usually hangout at 3 places: The Cafeteria, Nescafe and The Amphitheatre. Cafeteria serves you the best Butter Chicken and Naan, Donuts, Samosa on a student’s budget.  Next is the Nescafe. Nothing makes you feel better like a hot cappuccino in winters or an iced tea in summers, all accompanied by everybody’s favourite – Maggi. Sit down under the canopy and pet the dogs, or carry all this and move to the Amphi, the place to just relax and soak up the sun. And if that’s too hot for you, The New Common Room is the chilled room to lie down and take a nap.

  1. “Attendance ka koi chakkar hai?”

Yes, definitely. Your whole semester will run around how many classes you attend. It will be a race against the clock, especially for 8:45 am lectures. Proxies are a big no-no here but there’s another joy altogether when you say “Present” for yourself. By the time you leave this college, you’ll be a pro at time management.

  1. Mere paas Hudson Lane hai, tumhare paas kya hai?”

Being in South Campus, LSR is at a vantage point because all the addas are nearby. The immediate ones for us are Amar Colony known for its Tandoori Momos, Moolchand Station for its Chur Chur Naan, Nehru Place Epicuria for its food court.

Shambhavi Dutta, a first-year student from LSR “I usually have a budget of Rs.100, so Biryani from Amar Colony is my go-to meal. If you have some time on your hands, Satya Niketan is the most affordable place for you. It’s our own Hudson Lane. If you’re in a party mood, Hauz Khas Village, Green Park, SDA Market are all your doorstep. For shopping, you have the best markets around – Sarojini Market, Lajpat Nagar Market, and Greater Kailash”, she added.

At LSR, you will face a lot of stereotyping regarding your stance on various topics – Oh, you must be a feminist now; Breaking Patriarchal norms must be your favourite phrase; Have you “tried the other team” yet *wink wink*? What you wouldn’t give to make them understand the complexities of these statements. This will be a totally different experience because this college will break you into a million pieces, but then it will join you together into a woman who is ready to face whatever comes on her path. The magic of LSR will captivate you and take you on a journey for which you’ll be forever grateful.
